He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Smith and Dorothea Smith (Johannes); and his siblings, Mabel Hopkins, Dorothy Cattau, Ford Smith and Kenneth Smith.
He is survived by: his wife Margaret Smith; his daughters, Michelle Nerz (Paul) of McAllen and Stephanie Barker (Cory) of Bayard, Nebraska; his grandchildren, Robert Weatherly of Omaha, Blake Weatherly (Allie) of Omaha, Nicole Coss (Tate) of Palisade, Elisabeth Merriman (Jayden) of Omaha and Nathaniel Barker of Scottsbluff, NE.; his great grandchildren, Isaiah Weatherly, Brighton Coss and Adelynn Weatherly; and his siblings-in-law, David Blessen (Arlene), Mark Blessen (Peggy) and Charlotte Smith (Earl). He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service was held on Friday, November 14th 2025 at 10:30 AM at the Zion Lutheran Church (2421 Avenue A, Kearney, NE 68847). A graveside service was held on Monday, November 17th 2025 at 12:30 PM at the Omaha National Cemetery (14250 Schram Rd, Omaha, NE 68138).
