She was predeceased by: her parents, Mary K. Birkel and Matthew P. Birkel; and her sister Diane Birkel. She is survived by: her husband Jim Smith of Lincoln, NE; her children, Steve Smith of Lincoln, NE, Lynn (Mark), Sloan (Kansas City), Dan (Jessica) and Kate Smith of Lincoln, NE; her grandchildren, Matt Sloan of Valley, NE, Ryan (Rachel), Mandy Andersen (Dylan) of Lincoln, NE, Libby Shonka-Smith of Omaha, NE and Diana "Dean" Smith-Lind of Lincoln, NE; her great grandchild Liam Smith of Hickman, NE; and her siblings, David Birkel (Joyce) of Austin, TX, Donna Ingwersen of Wilber, NE and Dale Birkel of Lincoln, NE.
