He was predeceased by: his parents, Crozier Jackson and Marie Jackson (Martin); his brothers, Crozier Jackson and Melvin Jackson Sr.; and his son Eric Tillman.

He is survived by: his wife Barbara; his children, Chassidy Jackson-Goodwin (John Goodwin) and James E. Jackson, Jr. (Tisha Weaver-Clark); his grandchildren, Jaida Jackson, Sajai Jackson, Amarion James Jackson, John Goodwin and Trinity Goodwin; and his sister Brenda Stocks. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family for future designation.
