He was predeceased by: his parents, Harvey Mitchell and Laura Mitchell (Selvy); his brother Bob Mitchell (Robert); his nephew Doug Mitchell; and his granddaughter Amanda Smith Mitchell.

He is survived by: his wife Marilyn; his children, Robert Mitchell (Rondi), Paula Pflueger (Clark Froehlich) and Thomas Mitchell (Marialicia); his grandchildren, Nicholas Mitchell, Morgan Shnorbach (Kevin), Chase Pflueger (Katie), Justin Pflueger (Alice), Paige Pflueger, Derrek Mitchell (Jenna) and Robert Mitchell; his great grandchildren, Cael, Colin, Austin and Morgan Pflueger; his niece Marsha Caranci (Bary); and his brother-in-law Richard Paul (Jeanne). He is also survived by his niece and nephew.

In lieu of flowers, Earl would wish for memorials to be given to the Norfolk Arts Center Endowment.
