He was predeceased by: his parents, Verlon Thomas and Elda Laura Shears (Morrison); his wife Shirley Cotant; his grandson Dale Joe; and his brother Bernard Shears (Jan).

He is survived by: his children, Verlon Shears (Mindy), Marvin Shears and Vickie McDermott (Mike); his grandchildren, Jon (Bridget Weeder), Donald (Angela McDermott), Ryan (Wendy Louder), Tyler (Katelyn Shears) and Cody (Jessica Shears); his great grandchildren, Dustin Weeder, Koltin Weeder, Jayden McDermott, Cooper McDermott, Jesse Louder, Kayce Louder, Rylee Louder, Sawyer Louder, Talila Shears and Maela Shears; and his sister Doris Gartrell (Robert).

A memorial service was held on Wednesday, September 9th 2026 at 10:30 AM at the Mullen Methodist Church.
