He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Paul Schweiss and Elsie Pearl Neely Schweiss; and his siblings, Joseph Schweiss, Jr., John "Jack" Schweiss and Jean Griggs.
He is survived by: his wife Kathie Schweiss; his children, James Schweiss II and Kara Schweiss (Grant Hoover); his grandsons, Brock Hoover and Quinn Hoover; his daughter Shiloh Schweiss; his grandsons, Trevor Schweiss and Ty Schweiss; his son Shad Schweiss (Wendy); his grandchildren, Morgon Schlotzhauer, Jaslyn Schweiss and Ryland Schweiss; his son Zach Schweiss (Zach); and his siblings, Jerry Schweiss (Charlie) and Judie Swogger (Oscar). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In 2019, several years after a diagnosis of Alzheimer's dementia, Jim moved to the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home in Bellevue, Nebraska.
