He was predeceased by: his parents, Leo W. Schmidt and Marie M. Schmidt (Amfahr); his sister Marlene Lenius; and his goddaughter AnnMarie Loeb. He is survived by: his wife Veloy R. Schmidt; and his children, Jeffery Schmidt, Shari Schmidt, Susan Gloe (Terry), Jayme Schmidt (Bonnie), Shelley Kendrick (Brad), Stacy Lamm and Scott Schmidt (Kim). He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; many other family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home 12505 Harrison Tull Dr Bellevue 68123 and Make-a-Wish 1005 S 107th Ave Omaha 68114.
