He was predeceased by : his parents, August Niehs and Marie Niehs (Weinberger); and his siblings, Laurence, Harold Niehs, Teresa Niehs, Esther Niehs, Leona Lempke, Hazel Lewis, Evelyn Hanson, Elsie Niehs and Marion Edde.

He is survived by : his wife Donna Jean Birkley of Hettinger, ND; his children, Don Niehs (Angie) of Lenexa, KS and Diane Myers (Bryan) of Stromsburg; and his grandchildren, Jace, Kailee Niehs, Brandon, Dylan, Courtney, Brittney and Chelsey Myers.

A public memorial service will be held at a later date due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
