He was predeceased by: his parents, Gilbert Verney and Virginia Verney (Piggott); and his sister Valerie Verney Dill. He is survived by: his wife Dorothy Howard of Kalamazoo, MI; his children, Virginia Lucarelli of Telluride, CO, Liz Verney of Lyme, NH, Heather Wyman of Appleton, ME and Eric Verney of Nantucket, MA; his grandchildren, Thea, Caroline Lucarelli, Hannah, Addie Smith, Claire, Lucas Wyman, Jimmie and William Verney; and his siblings, Lumina Greenway of Andover, MA and Geoffrey Verney of Nantucket, MA..
Visitation was held on Thursday, September 18th 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Jellison Funeral Home (25 Concord St, Peterborough, NH 03458). A memorial service was held on Friday, September 19th 2025 at 1:00 PM at the All Saints Church (51 Concord St, Peterborough, NH 03458). A celebration of life was held on Friday, September 19th 2025 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Monadnock Country Club (49 High St, Peterborough, NH 03458).
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Richard's name to the Nantucket Conservation Foundation (https://support.nantucketconservation.org), St. George's School in Newport, RI, or the Monadnock Community Hospital—fitting tributes to a man whose life was devoted to leadership, conservation, education, and community.
