He is survived by: his grandchildren, Jeffrey and Danielle; his children, Robert Ayer (Laura) of Loudon, Christopher Ayer (Ellen) of Concord, Erin Smith (Jason) of Canterbury, Megan Shaffer (Gary) of Hampstead, NC, Ryan Hurd (Tessa) of Bow, Scott Hurd (Christine) of Morganton, NC and Sharon Howe of Bostic, NC; and his daughter-in-law Katherine Ayer of Smithfield, VA.. He is also survived by 28 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren.
