He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Raymond Ashey and Margaret Ashey (Crate); his wife Sue; his sister Susan Hayden of Iowa; his children, Alan (Rachelle) of Canterbury and Leslie Newman (Joe) of Florida; and his stepchildren, Tina Thibeau-Boyd of California and Doug Thibeau of Holderness. He was also cherished by seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

John donated many years of his time to the Laconia Little League as a coach, umpire, and president.
