He was predeceased by : his parents, James, Sr. and Madeline (Barrett); and his siblings, Joyce Heltzel, Joan Cross, Patricia Cantwell, Jacqueline Cody and John Cantwell.

He is survived by : his wife Nancy Cantwell (Swanbery); his sister Debbie Keller of Dallas, GA.; his children, Victoria Cantwell of Argyle, NY, James III of Milford, Rebecca Steingraber of Gansevoort, NY, Greg of Grantham, NH, Todd of Shillington, PA and Glenn (Maura) of Glastonbury, CT.; and his grandchildren, Gabriella West (Danny) of Brooklyn, NY, Paige Cantwell of New York City, Alexander Steingraber of Gansevoort, NY, Patrick Cantwell of Chicago, IL, Carter Steingraber of Gansevoort, NY and Gavin Cantwell of Shillington, PA..
