He was predeceased by: his parents, Jesse Alston and Bernice Alston; his sisters, Louise Kitchens and Mildred Alston; his siblings-in-law, Ida Goffin, Marie Mosby, Douglas M. Hill and Leroy Coles; and his in-law Lucy Mosby.

He is survived by: his wife Lenora V. Mosby of Cumberland, Virginia.; his children, Joel Alston (Tammy Freeman), NJ, Jerrel, Jenene and Juliette Gerald Birmingham; his granddaughter Juanita Bradshaw Birmingham (Tumani); his great grandchild Tyler Bradshaw Birmingham; his goddaughter Darnell Rogers; and his siblings, Verita J. Hill (NJ), Alfonza Alston (Delonia) and Milton Alston (Inga).
