Patrick Cullen wrote a sympathy message

“To the Family of Eileen Markenstein' May you be comforted by an abundance of Memories of Happier Times. While I have only known Eileen for 4 years, her Good Stewardship at restoring and preserving the gravemarkers and Legacy of the many Veterans resting at Harsimus Cemetery inspired many of us to become aware of, and proactive in issues involving Veterans' Gravemarkers at other local cemeteries. We follow her Example. That flame of resolve and determination that she lit will never be extinguished.”

Anthony Lovari wrote a sympathy message

“Eileen Markenstein is one of my heroes. She was the epitome of the word "selfless". She saved Harsimus Cemetery from ruins and made sure the hundreds of soldiers there had properly marked graves and beautiful tributes each Memorial Day and Veterans Day. She happily housed four war heroes/volunteers on the property. To say that she was one of the biggest supporters of my music is an understatement. To see her and her husband Aart together was the definition of a "happily ever after" true love.”
