James left this world on July 9, 2025 at the age of 85, leaving a void in the lives of so many people. He was predeceased by: his parents, James Butler, Sr. and Emma Harriet Butler; his wife Ruth Rice Butler; and his son Michael Scott Butler. He is survived by: his children, Debora Ann Nelson and Eric James Butler (Charlene); his granddaughters, Brittany Nelson, Julia Butler, Erica Butler and Heather Bethune; his great grandchildren, Gianna Nelson, Colson Bethune, David Bethune and Kiara Bethune; his siblings, Pauline Rice (Richard) and Rickey Butler (Chakela); and his girlfriend Gloria Thompson. He is also survived by relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 18th 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church (883 NJ-34, Matawan, NJ 07747).
