He was predeceased by: his parents, James Beard and Eleanor Beard; his sister Barbara Abel; and his nephews, James Abel and Hamilton Abel.
He is survived by: his wife Anita; his niece Beth Durtschi (Grant) of Idaho; his nephew Stephen Abel of Oklahoma; his great-nephew Robert Barney of Idaho; his great-nieces, Alicia Kaufman (Garth) of Wyoming and Rachel Burstain (Jon) of Texas; and his cousins, Lydia Jones (George) and Reagan Wiseman of Texas. He is also survived by five great-great-nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 7th 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the St. Peter's Episcopal Church (1 Hartford Rd, Medford, NJ 08055). A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 7th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the St. Peter's Episcopal Church (Moore Memorial Chapel) (1 Hartford Rd, Medford, NJ 08055).
Renowned for his pioneering contributions to signal processing, particularly in the development and application of Costas arrays, James revolutionized low-probability-of-intercept (LPI) radar signal design, enhancing target resolution and detection capabilities. His 2002 presentation at Rowan University, titled "Costas Arrays, Properties and Generators," and his contributions to related publications highlighted his expertise in creating waveforms with bounded autocorrelation, critical for modern radar and communication systems.
