He was predeceased by: his parents, William McGowan and Patricia McGowan; his brother Thomas McGowan; his son-in-law Fred Thacher; and his granddaughter Kelly Dockery.

He is survived by: his children, Marybeth Thacher, John Ryan (Lisa), Eileen Gillmore (George), Paul Ryan (Melissa), William Ryan (Nancy) and Charles Ryan (Mary); and his brother Robert McGowan (Maureen). He is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
