He is survived by: his significant other Sarah Wasserman; his children, Michelle and Jonathan; his siblings, Deborah and Daniel; and his grandson Jason.
Joel was a philanthropist making annual donations to Columbia University, ACLU, NARAL, Public Radio and Cancer Care.
