We announce the death of Joseph J. Shema of Oakland, New Jersey, born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, who passed away on August 3, 2026, at the age of 88. Joseph will be remembered by family members, friends, and others whose lives were connected in meaningful ways. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.

He was predeceased by: his parents, George Shema and Pearl Shema; and his brother Reverend George Shema. He is survived by: his wife Gladys Shema (Hakim); his children, Joseph Shema (Cheryl), Alan Shema (Jamie), Terri Roedel (Mike) and Elaine Shema (Allyn Muschko); his grandchildren, Alyssa Shema (William Newman), Alex Shema (Taelor), Christopher Roedel, Samantha Roedel, Reese Shema and Dylan Shema; his great grandchildren, Alex Jr., Audrey Shema and Lily Newman; and his sisters, Dolores Klocek (Philip) and Rose Cole (Richard Dellagiacoma).

In honor of his life and commitment, donations may be made to the organization in lieu of flowers.
