He was predeceased by: his parents, John A. Vanderbilt and Jane Crouse Vanderbilt; and his wife Evelyn Gill Vanderbilt. He is survived by: his children, Veronica Ciambrone (Nick), John W. Vanderbilt (MaryBeth), Debra Scheier (Barry Slack), Thomas Scheier (Ruth) and David Scheier; and his grandchildren, Michael Drake, Breanne, Emma Vanderbilt, Kristin Staboleski, Josh and Matthew Scheier. He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren and his good friend.
