He was predeceased by: his former wife Ann Moses Douglas; and his sister Jane Douglas Thompson. He is survived by: his friend Princeton; his wife Sheila A. Mahoney; his sister Lynne Douglas Hargrove; his children, Robert G. Douglas III (Monica Bean), Timothy S. Douglas (Anne S. Douglas) and Catherine L. Douglas (Mark Sargent); and his stepson Robert Mahoney (Lauren Mahoney). He is also survived by nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many other loving family members and friends.
His insights on pandemics, vaccine challenges, and public health preparedness were widely cited during the COVID-19 era. In 2021, he became a valued guest lecturer about the pandemic and science behind and efficacy of mRNA vaccine development at his alma mater, Princeton University.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Penn Medicine Princeton and the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases.
