Carole A. Berkowitz Obituary

The Family writes -- Carole Berkowitz Obituary Carole Ann Berkowitz (nee Weisbart) passed away on May 3rd, 2023, at her home in Short Hills, NJ. She was 75. She is survived by her son Eric, daughter CJ Amirat, son- in-law Hakim Amirat, granddaughter Sarah Amirat, brother Steven Weisbart and sister- in-law Barbara Weisbart, predeceased by her husband, Dr. Howard Berkowitz, and her parents, Bernice and Ira Weisbart. Carole grew up in Maplewood, graduating from Columbia High School, where she played on the tennis team.

At Case Western Reserve University she earned a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in psychology and mathematics and earning certification as a teacher. At the University of Pennsylvania's School of Education she earned a Master's degree in education statistics and test construction and started work at a New York City professional examination service. She then began Ph.D. coursework at Columbia University and, later, Stevens Institute of Technology. She married Dr. Howard Berkowitz and they moved to Short Hills, where she became active for decades in the "Friends of the Millburn Library," becoming its president.

When her children started school, she began work in his medical practice in Bayonne. Soon after her silver, 25th wedding anniversary her husband passed away in early-2002, after which she turned to teaching. She taught remedial math, business calculus, and statistics at Seton Hall University and several county colleges, and individually tutored high school students in the Essex and Morris county areas. Her ability to understand the challenges that her students faced and to teach in ways that engaged them made her work remarkably successful.

Fiercely devoted to her husband and children, Carole loved to swim, play tennis, play bridge, backgammon, sodoku, and bake. She was a devoted friend and a perpetual "influencer" who spread the word (and often gave a gift) whenever she found an item she regarded as "the best" of its kind. A graveside ceremony was held. If you wish to make a donation in her memory, the family requests that you donate to the Friends of the Millburn Library. Shiva Call will be held on Sunday from 1-4pm.
