She is survived by: her husband Professor Robert Rothberg; her daughter Abra Gorby; her son-in-law Bruce Gorby; and her grandchildren, Sarah and Charles Gorby.
A longtime resident of Summit, New Jersey and Dunewood, Fire Island, New York, Joan graduated from Vassar, where she was a Ford Foundation Scholar, Fulbright Scholar, and Captain of the College Bowl Debating Team.
