He was predeceased by: his parents, Adelina Cossio and Emilio Chavez; his wife Juanita Chavez; and his siblings, Fred Gutierrez, Oscar Cossio, Enrique, Luis, Elfego, Elias Jose Chavez and Dora Alvarez.
He is survived by: his sister Nellie Nieto; his brother-in-law Ray Nieto; and his sons, Orlando and Bernie Jr. (Chavez).
