It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Vernie Witten Jr. of Portales, New Mexico, who passed away on July 22, 2020, at the age of 96, leaving to mourn family and friends. He was predeceased by : his parents, Vernie E. Witten and Zola M. Witten; and his sister Beula Pollard. He is survived by : his wife Ida Lou; his daughters, Barbara Kilburn (Tom) of Mt. Pleasant, Vonna Witten of Portales, NM and Ayse Taimuty (Dan) of Bakersfield; and his siblings, Cleora McReynolds of Trenton Missouri and Gerald Witten of Emporia Kansas. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to ENMU Vern Witten Endowed Scholarship in Mathematics, First United Methodist Church-Portales, NM, or ENMU Wesley Foundation.

Dr. Bob Taylor wrote a sympathy message

“Having worked with Vern during almost all of his time at ENMU, and most of his time with the Council of Professors Emeritus, we, his university friends will dearly miss him. He was truly a gem to our community here in Portales. I attended his memorial service this Saturday but with the virus I was not able to express my thoughts to the community and his family. It is with my deepest sympathies I extend my condolences to his family. Dr. Bob Taylor.”
