He was loved and cherished by many people including : his parents, Roy Eugene Mathews and Bernice Harrison of Roswell, NM; his former life partner Twyla Smith of Roswell; his wife Shelly Ervin (Gene) of Roswell; his grandchildren, Sierra and Skylar Ervin of Roswell; his siblings, Terry Mathews of Roswell, NM, Ray Mathews (Joann) of Roswell, NM and Brenda Kennedy (Don) of Roswell, NM; his aunts, Sue Mathews and Betty Markham; his uncle Dee Harrison; his nieces and nephews, Steve Kennedy (ClaraAnne), David Kennedy (Rayshell), DJ Kennedy, Kim Storie, Kimberly Guerrero, Amy Mathews (Justin), Mandi Clem (Jason), Ryan Mathews (Tammy) and Tammi Mathews (Rick); and his grandparents, Willie, Gillie Mathews, Johnny and Florence Harrison. He was also cherished by his family and friends.

Viewing was held on Sunday, April 21st 2024 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Anderson-Bethany Funeral Home and Crematory (2609 S Main St, Roswell, NM 88203). A graveside service was held on Monday, April 22nd 2024 at 11:00 AM at the South Park Cemetery (3101 S Main St, Roswell, NM 88203).

He was a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
