Norman Herschel Miner, Jr Obituary
Norman H. Miner, Jr., age 69, passed away peacefully at Hearthstone Skilled Nursing Facility, Sparks, Nevada on Friday December 3, 2021. He was born February 18, 1952 at Memorial Hospital in Ceres, California to Norman H. Miner, Sr. and Georgrain (Sparks) Miner. At an early age Norman moved with his family to Reno, Nevada where he attended St. Thomas School and Bishop Manogue Catholic High School.
He graduated from University of Nevada Reno in 1976 with a degree in Political Science, International Relations. He also completed post graduate studies in Psychology, Counseling and Social Work. After college he spent two years at the Jesuit Novitiate in Santa Barbara, CA.
He studied Western Spirituality and Philosophy, performed duties as a welfare assistant for Catholic Social Services and taught American Government at St. Ignatius College Preparatory High School in San Francisco. After returning to Nevada, he began a 30-year career as a licensed addictions/substance abuse counselor, trainer, supervisor, and program manager. He worked for various organizations including Parkside Med/Keystone Program at St. Mary’s Hospital, Northern Area Substance Abuse Council, Washoe Medical Center Life Skills, Renown Behavioral Health and Northern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services.
Norman was a dedicated professional and had true compassion for his patients. Throughout his adult life, Norman encountered many of his own health challenges and faced them with determination and a positive attitude. Norman was predeceased by his parents and his sisters Lenore Miner (infant) and Cynthia Finley, née-Miner.
He is survived by his children Jillian Miner of Reno and Josh Miner living in Australia, siblings Kenneth (Marianne) Miner, David Miner, Timothy (Corinne) Miner, Kathleen Miner, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. As per Norm’s wishes, there will not be a funeral service. A private graveside service will be held at a date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the SPCA of Northern Nevada.
