He was predeceased by : his parents, William Carey and Martha Carey (McCullough); his wife Virginia Carey (Koreman); his close friend Joan Stanford; his cousin Edward McCullough (Marcia); and his friends, John and Joan Nerf.

He is survived by : his children, Maureen Somerville (Robert) of Wynantskill, Stephen Carey (David Perry) of Los Angeles and Edward Carey (Katie) of Delmar; his grandchildren, Virginia Somerville, Mary Jane MacPherson (Timothy), Elizabeth Popek (Justin), Emily Birgeles (Kevin), Robert Somerville, Irene Kelleigh (Hugh), Bridget Gray (Nolan), Joseph Somerville, Timothy Carey (Tiffany) and Maureen Snyder (Nicholas); and also, Gloria Romano, Mike, Trish Hardy, Connie and Jack Tully. He is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Joe's memory to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 1757 Central Avenue, Suite 102, Albany, NY 12205 or to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Avenue, Menands, NY 12204.
