He was predeceased by : his parents, Donald Mitchell and Leona Toole Mitchell; his wife Pat; his children, Timothy Mitchell and Christine Mitchell; his stepfather Frank Mulvey; his brother Edward Mitchell; his parents-in-law, Clarence and Rose Tabor VanOstrand; and his brother-in-law Clarence VanOstrand.

He is survived by : his children, Coleen Johnson, Corene Wood, William Mitchell Jr. and Melissa Mitchell; his grandchildren, Shane, Alex Mitchell, Erik, Kyle, Dr. Kelly Johnson Sellers (William), Mathew, Luke Johnson, Cody Wood, Beth Wood Phillips and Keith Mitchell; his great grandchildren, Nina, Xavier, Ivar, Finnigan and Declan; his sister Cathy Fauss (John); and his sisters-in-law, Virginia VanOstrand and Tammy Behara (Paul). He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
