He was loved and cherished by many people including: his wife Arlene G. Schmalenberger; his sons, Peter Schmalenberger (Mary) and Greg Schmalenberger; and his grandchildren, Thomas, John, Victoria and Robert.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peter's name to St. Jude Children's Hospital or the Nassau County Firefighters Burn Center.
