Edith M. Balseca Obituary

Edith Balseca, 82, passed peacefully in her Bronx, New York home on March 29, 2026. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 3rd, from 10:00–12:30 at Sisto Funeral Home, 3489 East Tremont Avenue, Bronx, NY 10465, followed by interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, 4199 Webster Avenue, Bronx, NY 10470.

Edith was a native of Guayaquil, Ecuador, and came to the United States in 1966. She first worked as a seamstress while earning her GED and learning English. She later went on to become a Home Health Aide for the same agency that cared for her during the last seven years of her life.

If there was one word to describe Edith, it would be determined. She was determined to give her children the very best and never compromised on what she believed was right for them. She did this on her own, sometimes working three jobs. Her legacy lives on in the remarkable accomplishments of her children and grandchildren.

Her family apologizes to their neighbors for all the flowers she secretly cut from your plants and bushes over the years. They also extend their thanks to the lady at the fruit market for always allowing her to return what she considered substandard-quality avocados.

She will be fondly remembered for her love of cooking. It was her love language, and nothing made her happier than sharing the foods she grew up with. She spent countless hours passing down recipes, determined to ensure these traditions would not be lost to future generations. Edith will also be remembered for her devotion to "tradition"—filling shot glasses and making sure everyone in the vicinity took a shot, whether they were prepared or not. For anyone who may have forgotten the words to her toast, here is a reminder: "Pa' arriba, pa' abajo, pa' fuera y pa' dentro.". Edith never visited her children or grandchildren without a care packages which almost always included eggs, onions, potatoes, cheese danishes, mangoes, toothpaste, and mini croissants, these were what she considered necessities for every house, to date we have continued to follow her lead and have most if not all these items readily available in our homes.

She is survived by her daughter Soraya (Dominic), her son Anthony (Moria), and her grandchildren Cristina, Melissa (Chris), Aislyn, and Ryan. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her honor to the Dementia Society at http://www.dementiasociety.org.
