Irene M (Steger) Rabe Obituary
Irene left this life peacefully on January 18, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. Irene was the youngest of five children born to John and Edna Steger. She was predeceased by her husband Robert and her four siblings. Irene was a devoted mother to Diana (David) and Walter. Irene was a loving Nana to Roberta, Stephanie and Quentin and Aunt to Paula.
Irene enjoyed going to her summer home in Wading River and visiting farm stands on the East End of Long Island with her daughter and granddaughters. Spending a day at the Holtsville or Montauk pool was always on the summer bucket list. Enjoying a bowl of clam chowder on Gosman’s Dock, getting a pie at Briermere Farms, or a day trip to Greenport or the Hamptons was a summer ritual. Montauk, Lake George and Wildwood vacations with her family were fun times. After retirement Irene spent her summers growing tomatoes, gardening and making jam. In the fall, she made homemade soup. Always on a quest for a new bakery or visiting the new hipster spots in her Queens neighborhood on the weekends. One highlight was talking to her grandson about his flying endeavors, and what was new in his life. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular was a Christmas tradition, with dinner at Joe’s Restaurant.
Though cancer caught her by surprise, Irene fought it bravely every step of the way.
Irene will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
