Joseph McSherry Obituary

Joseph “Joe” McSherry, loving father and husband, passed away peacefully at his home in the Bronx, NY, on October 13, 2025, at the age of 65.

Born on November 27, 1959, in the Bronx, NY, to Thomas and Dolores McSherry, Joe grew up the middle child among his siblings; older sister and brother Susan and Thomas (Mack), and younger brother and sister James and Sheila.

He held a number of jobs over the years, including serving as a conductor for the MTA, and spent many years as a carpenter at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital. Most recently, he was a Foreman of the mechanic shop at Mount Sinai Morningside, where he often went beyond his duties to help others. Joe was known for chatting with patients and staff, always making sure they felt comfortable and cared for. A proud member of Local 30, he was admired for his dedication and advocacy on behalf of his fellow union members.

Outside of work, Joe had many passions, especially caring for animals. He and his family frequently took in and fed the local cats of their neighborhood; Dewey, Balcom, Huntington, Mow, and many others. Most recently, he and his wife adopted a young cat named Mr. Eddie from the ASPCA. Joe’s love of nature extended beyond the felines; he happily fed squirrels, sparrows, blue jays, and even the occasional skunk, raccoon or opossum. He would also build shelters for them, and fill them with pillows, blankets, and even a heating pad for winter months. No animal ever lived more comfortably than the ones who wandered by.

Joe was an “actions speak louder than words” kind of man who lived by the principle “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Luke 6:31) a core value of his Catholic faith. His generosity reached friends and strangers alike, many of whom became friends because of his humor and good spirit. Whether giving rides to the store, lending tools, or offering food, groceries, and money to those in need, Joe embodied kindness in motion.

If one thing could rival his warmth toward others, it was his die-hard loyalty to the New York Giants and Yankees. He rooted for both teams through every high and low, a reflection of the steadfast loyalty that defined him in all aspects of life. Anyone lucky enough to be on Joe’s team, on the field or in his heart, knew he would always be in their corner.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jeannine Ann McSherry, and his son, Sean Vincent McSherry; his siblings, Susan Riegel, Thomas (Mack) McSherry, James McSherry, and Sheila Murphy; and his many nieces and nephews; Daniel “Danny” Murphy, Paige McSherry, Jasmine Riegel, Mark McKay Jr., Ryan, Tara, and Jillian Maloney; and great nephew, Robert “Beau” Mazzeo.
