He was predeceased by : his parents, Yancey Smith and Elizabeth Smith; and his sister Harriet. He is survived by : his wife Bonnie; his children, Neal, Matthew, Elizabeth and Pauline; his grandchildren, Abigail, Rachel, Emma and Thomas; and his brother Yancey.

“Oh My. One of my closest friends for years in Syracuse. We shared an apartment for two years, while teaching. Meals together, shopping together, late into the night, Can't believe it. We spoke several times last week. Described his ailment but seemed hopeful. Bonnie, and all, I'm devastated as are you. Great human being gone. Just a few months ago we stood in my driveway in Maryland talking, and remembering, after having a three hour lunch nearby. leaving so many loving hearts.”
