He was predeceased by : his parents, Edwin Carlton and Beatrice Pringle Spear. He is survived by : his wife Susan Heard Spear; his sons, Peter of Hudson and Jeffrey of Concord; his grandchildren, Will, Alexandra and Iris; his sisters, Norma Frevert and Margaret Hanlon; his friends, Bob and Larry; his nieces, Lynn Frevert Wigley, Brenda Frevert James, Sharon Frevert Skeen, Linda Hanlon Watson and Karen Hanlon Fleming; and his nephew Jim Hanlon.

“I just want to express my sympathy for Dick's passing. In the short time I had to know him he impressed upon me he was an old soul .A gentleman observing and quiet but always ready to pull the trigger with wisdom or quick wit. I had a great deal of respect for the pilot of a Huey and the pictures and stories Dick shared.I was blessed by Sue who let me help at their home these last few months.It was there I witnessed a great love and twinkle of two completely devoted to each other .”
