She was predeceased by : her parents, Hugh Cox and Marie Cox; and her husband George McDonald. She is survived by : her sons, George Jr. and Kevin (Anne); her grandchildren, Kyle Mcdonald (Erica) and Tyler McDonald; and her children, Maureen, Paul Merkel, Lauren (David Kennington), Erin (Matt Hawkins), Charlotte, William and Eileen Grim (late Scott).

Visitation was held on Sunday, April 28th 2024 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Arthur F. White Funeral Home, Inc. (315 Conklin St, Farmingdale, NY 11735). A funeral Mass was held on Monday, April 29th 2024 at 9:45 AM at the St. Kilian RC Church (485 Conklin St, Farmingdale, NY 11735).

Joan was a fair justice, seeking thinker and cared about the struggles of folks with modest means, and practiced her politics and her charity accordingly.
