He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph F. Grates, Jr. and Pauline Polizzi (McFaul); his caregiver Barb DiGeorgio; his brother Joseph Grates; and his nephews, Patrick Volz and Joseph F Grates IV.
He is survived by: his wife Anne Grates (Daley); his sons, Kelly, Scott Grates (Kelly) of Frankfort and PJ Grates (Hanna Yifru); his grandchildren, Tyler, Conner, Jenna, Julian and Bella; his sisters, JoAnn Volz (Patrick) of Layton and Philamine Burks of Alvarado, Texas; and his friends, Bill, Kathy Evans, Peter, Cindy Pianella, John, Val Ackley, Jim Maida, Ron Gatto and Justin Vallone. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins.
