He was predeceased by : his parents, Francis Bates and Flosie Bates (Smith); and his siblings, Richard Bates, Pauline Stratton, Mary Wagner, Nancy Gleason and Lois Ellis.

He is survived by : his girlfriend Wilma Storm (Hallett); his children, Donnie Bates (JoAnn) and Jenifer Miller; his siblings, Barbra Jones, Roger Bates and Linda Frey (John); his grandchildren, Bradley, Leah, Poppy, Andrea and Kathryn; and his great grandchildren, Grady, McKenna and Sage. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers contributions in his honor can be made to Hammondsport United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 44, Hammondsport, NY 14840.
