He was predeceased by : his son Samuel A. McLafferty; his parents, Joel E. McLafferty and Margaret Keifer McLafferty; and his siblings, Lucy and Charles.

He is survived by : his wife Elizabeth "Tibby" Curley; his children, Ann (Koko Diaz), Martha (Jonathan Skinner), Joel and Sara (Avijit Ghosh); and his daughter-in-law Vera. He is also survived by ten grandchildren.
