He was predeceased by: his parents, Noah Bender and Elizabeth Byler Bender; and his children, Daniel Bender, Annamary, Nancy and Marie.

He is survived by: his wife Elizabeth Hershberger Bender; and his sons, Owen (Betty Bender) and Ernest (Rachel Bender).
