He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Danuta Zawadzka Gortel of Poland and Pawel Gortel; his wife Samantha Awand-Gortel of Lanesville; his sisters, Johanna Shonhert and Julia Lewis; his nieces, Finley, Riley, Lina and Marie; and his stepmother Nancee Schreiber.

The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Shandaken Animal Volunteer Effort.
