He was predeceased by: his son-in-law Edward Uhlig. He is survived by: his wife Marion Henderson Gates; his children, Russell W. Gates Jr. of Marietta, Keith Gates (Sharon) of Marcellus and Cynthia Uhlig of Syracuse; his grandsons, Robert (Kelly), James (Jessica), Joseph (Valeri), Michael and Kevin Gates (Abigail); and his great grandchildren, Chloe, Dylan, Leah, Jacob, Devon, Austin, Jayden, Whysper, Faela, Joshua, Tobias, Elias, Parker and Sawyer.
Visitation will be held on Monday, November 10th 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Butler-Badman Funeral Home (4504 W Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse, NY 13215). A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 11th 2025 at 2:00 PM at the same location.
