He was predeceased by: his wife Kathryn Ambrey McDermott; his parents, Michael Joseph McDermott and Margaret Beasty McDermott; and his sister Margaret Cannisi. He is survived by: his daughter Nancy Surridge (Tim); his grandson Matthew; his son Michael (Tracy); his grandchildren, Harper and Lily; his sister-in-law Rosemary Ambrey; his sibling's children, Carolyn Ambrey and Thomas Ambrey; and his close friend Judy Sillis.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to United Hospice of Rockland or the Dementia Society of America.
