He was predeceased by: his parents, Lawrence J. Downing and Alice Downing; his son Michael (Catherine); and his siblings, Gloria (Walsh), Lawrence, Richard and William.
He is survived by: his daughter-in-law Tara Downing; Marguerite Peck (Ernest), John Downing Jr. (Brenda), Alison Metzler (William) and Patrick (Katalin). He is also survived by nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 7th 2026 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home (1076 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10028). A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, October 8th 2026 at 10:00 AM at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola (980 Park Ave, New York, NY 10028).
He was a past president and supporter of the Emerald Association of Long Island which hosted the nation's longest running charity ball for the Diocese of Brooklyn.
