He was predeceased by: his father Phillip; and his brother Ronald Sherman. He is survived by: his wife Sue; his daughters, Sabrina McEvoy (Rob) and Cristine Robinson (Kelly); his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Katie, Caroline, Charlotte and Clay; and his sister Pam Pantzer.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Spencer's memory to Princeton University Annual Giving.

“I was sad to hear of the passing of Doctor Sherman. I was a caddie at East Hampton Golf club and I was his regular caddie for a few years. We spent many beautiful mornings together and it was fun helping him with his golf game. We were usually the first ones on the course and would finish 18 holes in two hours or so. One amazing morning we were on the 17th tee box and I handed "Doc" his secret weapon 11 wood and watched him make the only hole in one I ever witnessed. RIP Doc”
