She was predeceased by: her parent Francis E. Whitaker; and her husband John O. Mendez, Jr.. She is survived by: her mother Claire Whitaker (Koller) of Newburgh; her children, Jason F. Mendez (Kelli Matheson) of Middletown, Laura A. Mendez (James Oetzel) and Michelle C. Mendez; her siblings, Fred Whitaker (Elaine) of Newburgh, Jerry Whitaker (Karen) of Mashpee, MA, Matthew Whitaker (Susan) of Arlington, VA, Daniel Whitaker of Decatur, GA and Ellen Whitaker of Newburgh; and her grandchild Raelynn. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Her children have collaborated with the Newburgh Armory Unity Center to collect donations in her memory to help support their children's library.
