He was predeceased by: his parents, Hummie Stone and Annie Lee Mayo Stone; his son Shawn Stone; and his siblings, Mae Cross, Annie Cross, Louise Reid, Willie Jefferson, Mary Moss, Shirley Patterson and Ernest Stone.

He is survived by: his wife Susan Van Etten Stone; his children, Roland Kenneth Van Etten and Sally Stone; his grandchildren, Triniti Van Etten and Jordyn Van Etten; and his siblings, Lois Demear, Linda Harris and Arnest Stone. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in John's name to the American Diabetes Association.
