He was predeceased by: his parents, Van G. Markel, Sr. and Julia Markel (Yablonsky); his former wife Mary Alice Markel (Purtell); his brother Robert Markel; and his grandson Jared Markel.
He is survived by: his wife Maureen; and his children, Van T. Markel (Liz Geier) of Queens, NY, Daniel M. Markel of South Carolina, J. Douglas Markel (Cheyenne Bear) of Gardiner, NY, Katherine M. Miller (Steven) of Ormond Beach, FL and Kristen Markel (Beaux Blackwood) of Walden. He is also survived by six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
