Thomas W Schryver Obituary

Tom Schryver of North Chili, NY, passed away at age 84 on January 2, 2021.

Tom was born on July 20, 1936, in Buffalo, NY, the son of Clifford and Cornelia Schryver. He attended the University of Buffalo. He met Patricia DeSantis and married on August 20, 1960. They moved from Buffalo to North Chili in 1969 where they have resided since.

Tom is survived by his wife of 60+ years, Patricia Schryver; his sister, Lynda (John/deceased) Fazzolari (North Collins, NY);
his children, Tom Jr (Cincinnati, OH), Susan (Jim) Dalton (Colonia, NJ), Lisa (Greg) Hassett (Rochester, NY), and Jim (Christi) Schryver (Spring City, PA);
his grandchildren, James Schryver, Raeann and Liam Dalton, Alison (deceased) and Frank Hassett;
his nieces and nephews, Corinne (Charles) Leone, John Fazzolari, Clifford (Kathy) Fazzolari, James Fazzolari, Jeffrey (deceased) (Lynn) Fazzolari, Carrie Lynn Fazzolari, Jeff Gallagher, Kim (Pierre) Carmi, and Dan Gallagher;
his sister-in-laws, Alice (Teddy/deceased) Gallagher and Rosemary DeSantis.

Tom was a career civil servant, retiring from the New York State Department of Transportation after a long career. Our excellent roadways and recreational trails stand as his legacy.

Tom was passionate about gardening. Thousands of flowers flourished in his yard every year. His tomato harvests were epic.

Tom became an athlete in 1972. He trained daily, running, biking, or swimming, for the next 30+ years. He was well-known in the local running community, racing every weekend. He owned over a thousand race shirts, including many marathons and triathlons. Running not only saved his life, but it also enriched it. He was active in the Greater Rochester Track Club for many years.

Thoughtful, well-read, and very social, he put everyone at ease and made them laugh. Beneath his easy-going exterior, he was a humble man with an indomitable spirit. He was infectiously optimistic. His prodigious intellect was matched by his empathy and boundless energy. He had a kind nature and was genuinely nice to everyone.

As he was fond of saying was also how he lived:
Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you've imagined.

A celebration of life will be scheduled when we are able to gather safely.

Barbara Kelly wrote a sympathy message

“I fondly remember my neighbor, Tom, as an expert gardener among other things. I loved to tease him about trying to steal his tomatoes. They were always awesome. I chuckle remembering the one time he was wrong: he said the rose bush I planted near my garage would never grow...not enough sun. May he Rest In Peace; he deserves it.”
