He was predeceased by: his wife Elizabeth "Betty Anne" Schmitt; his parents, Paul Schmitt and Anna Schmitt; and his brothers, Paul and John.
He is survived by: his children, Peter Schmitt (Kathy), Michael Schmitt (Eileen), Elizabeth Longden, Marybeth Schmitt-Simotas (Alex) and Patricia Decrescenzo; his sister Margaret Naughton; his grandchildren, Michael Schmitt Jr., Kyle Smith (Leah), Rosemary Miles (Johnny), Olivia Smith, Katy Ritter (Gray), Justin Schmitt, Ian Longden, Jillian Schmitt, Roman Decrescenzo, Jane Longden, Bridget Longden and Chloe Decrescenzo; and his great grandchildren, Isla Smith and Jack Miles. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 9th 2026 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Nolan Funeral Home (5 Laurel Ave, Northport, NY 11768). A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, October 10th 2026 from 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM at the St. Philip Neri Church (344 Main St, Northport, NY 11768). A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 10th 2026 from 12:15 PM to 12:30 PM at the Northport Rural Cemetery.
